“We lacked the quality”: Gabon coach reflects on heavy defeat to Super Eagles

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

Gabon head coach Thierry Mouyouma has admitted his side fell short of the required standard after their 4–1 defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Thursday night’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff semifinal in Rabat.

The Panthers opened with early intensity and pressed Nigeria high, but the momentum gradually shifted as the Super Eagles settled into the contest. After a tightly contested first half at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Sports Complex, Jerome Akor handed Nigeria the lead, before Mario Lemina struck late to level the score and send the match into extra time.

Gabon’s resistance, however, quickly unraveled. Substitute Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s advantage shortly after the restart, and Victor Osimhen took control from there, scoring twice to seal a commanding win for the three-time African champions.

“We were not good enough. We were not sharp enough in the offensive box, and we didn’t defend well in our defensive box. Nigeria did both and scored,” Mouyouma said, as quoted by News.ng.

“The match was decided on fine margins. The scoreline doesn’t show how well we competed against one of the most dangerous attacking sides in Africa.”

Mouyouma praised his players’ commitment but emphasized the need for significant improvement if Gabon hopes to compete consistently at elite level.

“The boys fought, but it wasn’t enough. We must grow, work harder, and be better in key moments. Nigeria punished our mistakes and deserved their victory,” he added.

Reflecting on the loss, the Gabon coach admitted the result was disappointing but said it underlined the gap his team must bridge to challenge a Nigerian side that demonstrated superior depth, sharpness, and composure when it mattered most.
