Nigeria 4-1 Gabon Player Ratings: Akor delivered, Osimhen cooked, Fredrick superb

By Wale Mustapha

Nigeria’s men senior national team booked their place in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoffs with a commanding 4–1 extra-time victory over Gabon in Rabat on Thursday.

Victor Osimhen struck twice, while Adams Akor and Chidera Ejuke added a goal each to seal a dominant comeback performance. Here is our writer’s assessment of how each player fared in the crucial semifinal clash:

1. Stanley Nwabali — 6.5/10

The Chippa United goalkeeper had little to contend with but responded well when called upon. Conceded through no fault of his own. Still shows some unnecessary theatrics.

2. Bright Osayi-Samuel — 5/10

A mixed display. Nearly conceded a penalty and looked shaky afterward. Needs significant improvement with his final delivery.

3. Zaidu Sanusi — 6/10

Defensively solid and recovered fairly well, though sometimes late. Must add more attacking influence to his game.

4. Benjamin Fredrick — 10/10

A flawless performance from the youngster. Confident, composed, and decisive in his interceptions. Completely neutralized Aubameyang and capped the night with a sublime assist.

5. Calvin Bassey — 9/10

A defensive leader throughout. Dominant in both aerial and ground duels and supported the attack when needed. Rock-solid display.

6. Wilfred Ndidi — 7.5/10

Slow start but grew into the game. Provided excellent defensive cover and contributed going forward, including a fine assist. Will miss the final due to suspension.

7. Samuel Chukwueze — 5/10

Largely anonymous. Poor decision-making and inconsistent deliveries. Needs improvement after another quiet outing.

8. Alex Iwobi — 6.5/10

His 90th cap coincided with a below-par performance. Tried to create chances early but faded under pressure from the Gabon midfield.

9. Ademola Lookman — 5/10

Still battling for form. Unsuccessful dribbles and limited influence. Capable of much better.

10. Adams Akor — 8/10

Outstanding once again. Constant threat, strong hold-up play, and intelligent movement. Showed excellent awareness for the opening goal.

11. Victor Osimhen — 8.5/10

A menace throughout and redeemed earlier misses with two decisive goals in extra time. Tireless pressing and leadership in the final third.

Substitutes

12. Chidera Ejuke — 7.5/10

Impactful cameo. Persistent, dangerous runs and eventually scored the crucial go-ahead goal.

13. Moses Simon — 5/10

Struggled to influence the tempo. More is expected from the winger.

14. Frank Onyeka — 6/10

Added energy and stability to midfield but needs to maintain composure to avoid unnecessary bookings.

15. Chidozie Awaziem — 7/10

Delivered a fine free-kick assist for Osimhen. Solid shift.

16. William Troost-Ekong — 6.5/10

Late cameo but made key interceptions to help close out the match.

17. Tolu Arokodare — Unrated

Too few minutes to make a meaningful impact.

Nigeria now turn attention to Sunday’s final against DR Congo as they aim to move one step closer to a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
