‘We will improve’ – Abia Angels’ Victoria Eyakndue remains undeterred by Robo Queens loss
By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Abia Angels succumbed to its third straight defeat of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership season on Wednesday with a 2-0 loss to FC Robo Queens in Lagos, a result captain, Victoria Eyakndue says won’t affect the team’s ambition to qualify for the Super Six.
Two second-half goals from Folashade Ijamilusi and Taiwo Lawal broke the heart of visiting Abia Angels who hoped to end its losing streak at the Legacy pitch, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
The Aba-based side has continued to struggle for results recently after stunning Edo Queens 1-0 in Benin City in January – one of the upsets of the season.
With three defeats in its last four games, the defender heaped praises on her team, while hoping they will turn the tide in their next game.
“I will say it was a good game for my team, Abia Angels. We fought as a team no matter what. It’s part of football. It’s either you win, lose, or draw. I give kudos to my team. We fought hard as a team,” Eyakndue told Nigeriafootball.ng.
“I won’t say the mid-season break affected our performance. Will say God knows the end of a thing from the beginning. We will still wait for the subsequent matches. I know my team will improve.”
Next encounter between Abia Angels and Ibom Angels is a crucial encounter for both teams facing contrasting fortunes on the league table.
Adekemi Akintan’s 78th-minute strike separated both sides in the first leg last December in Uyo as the Orange Ladies returned to winning ways on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Adamawa Queens in its bid to avoid relegation.
A win for Abia Angels will end a run of three straight defeats and boost its ambition to qualify for the Super Six.
“I expect nothing less than a win in our next match against Ibom Angels. Personally, I believe we will improve from our next game and start winning games,” she continued.
“Our target this season generally is to qualify for the Super Six and I believe by God’s grace, we will be able to aim towards that. Irrespective of how we start this second stanza of the season, we will still be able to work towards getting to the Super Six at the end.”
