William Troost-Ekong in awe of Amahoro Stadium beauty and hospitality

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, has expressed his admiration for both the Amahoro Stadium and the hospitality shown by Rwanda after leading the Super Eagles to a crucial 2-0 victory over the Amavubi in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The win, secured by a first-half brace from Victor Osimhen, marked Nigeria’s first victory in the qualifying campaign and was an important step forward.

Following the match, Troost-Ekong shared his thoughts in a heartfelt video posted on X, where he praised Rwanda for its exceptional football infrastructure and welcoming atmosphere.

“This is my second time in Rwanda, and the first time was great,” Troost-Ekong said. “When I walked into the stadium, I think this is the best stadium I have seen in Africa. Big compliments to what’s been done here, the facilities. I think Rwanda has set the standards for how things should be in Africa.”

Troost-Ekong went on to hail Rwanda’s high standards in terms of cleanliness, hospitality, and the overall experience.

“This is also one thing that we have to do, unite as a continent, and I think Rwanda has set a great example, from the cleanliness to the hotels, the airport, everywhere we’ve been so far.”

Despite the warm reception off the pitch, Troost-Ekong acknowledged the fierce competitive spirit on the field.

“The people have been friendly, they’ve been welcoming,” he said, “But it’s always difficult when you are on the pitch because you’re fighting for the same thing. Besides that, they are respectful.”

His comments reflect not only the respect he has for Rwanda’s football culture but also the positive relationship between the two nations off the pitch.

Rwanda’s infrastructure and hospitality, as highlighted by Troost-Ekong, continue to set a high standard for African football.
