World Cup qualifiers: Double boost for Super Eagles as Lookman and Ajayi near returns

By Dayo Awoniyi

Nigeria has received a significant boost as two key players, Ademola Lookman and Semi Ajayi, edge closer to their returns from injury.

Lookman, the reigning African Player of the Year, has resumed training with Atalanta and is expected to make a full recovery in time for Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe later next month.

Lookman’s return is a major lift for the Super Eagles, as his form for Atalanta has been exceptional.

With 14 goals and seven assists to his name, the forward had been sidelined due to injury, missing Atalanta’s final UEFA Champions League group-stage match against Barcelona.

His availability will potentially strengthen Nigeria’s attacking options as they look to build momentum in the qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Ajayi is also on the verge of making a comeback after a long-term injury.

The Super Eagles defender has been out of action since November, but West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed that Ajayi will feature in an U21 youth game to assess his fitness.

Ajayi’s return will be a welcome addition to Nigeria’s defense as they prepare for the crucial World Cup qualifiers.

With both players nearing full fitness, the Super Eagles are poised to regain some key players just when they are most needed, further strengthening their squad for the upcoming challenges on the road to the 2026 World Cup.
