2023 African Games: Falconets to face Uganda in women’s football semi final

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The stage is set for an exhilarating semifinal clash between the Nigeria U-20 women’s national team and Uganda at the 2023 African Games.

Following a hard-fought battle between host nation Ghana and Uganda in the final Group A fixture, which ended in a 1-1 draw, the lineup for the semifinals was confirmed.

Catherine Nagadya’s early goal for Uganda was equalized by Mukurama Abdulai in the 36th minute, leading to a deadlock in the match. With this result, Ghana secured the top spot in Group A with seven points, while Uganda settled for second place with five points.

Unfortunately, Tanzania and Ethiopia bid farewell to the tournament as they failed to advance beyond the group stage.

Meanwhile, in Group B, Nigeria emerged as the group leaders with six points from two matches, followed by Senegal with three points. Morocco, with no points, exited the competition.

The Falconets are now geared up to face Uganda in the first semifinal showdown scheduled for March 18, 2024. Following this clash, Ghana will take on Senegal in the second semifinal match.

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s team is aiming to replicate their success from the previous edition of the African Games in Rabat, Morocco, where they clinched the gold medal.
