2025 AFCONQ: Remo Stars’ Frank Mawuena gets Togo call-up to face Algeria

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Remo Stars striker Frank Mawuena has received his first international call-up to represent the Togolese national team for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers.

The talented forward, who has impressed in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, is part of Togo’s squad for their crucial Group E fixtures against Algeria.

Mawuena has been a key player for the Sky Blue Stars, scoring one goal in five appearances so far this season.

His inclusion in the Togolese national team marks a significant milestone in his career, as he joins a squad that will face a tough challenge against group leaders Algeria on October 10th, with the return leg scheduled for October 14th.

Togo is currently in second place in Group E, having earned two draws in their opening fixtures. They secured a 1-1 draw against Liberia last month, followed by a 2-2 stalemate against Equatorial Guinea.

Despite these results, Togo remains unbeaten and will be looking to secure their first win against Algeria, who have a perfect record in the group with two wins from two games.

The top two teams from Group E will advance to the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, making these upcoming matches crucial for Togo’s qualification hopes.

Mawuena’s call-up is a testament to his form and potential, and his inclusion in the Togolese squad will provide a boost to the team as they aim to challenge the Desert Foxes in their pursuit of a spot in the continental tournament.
