2025 U20 Afcon: Flying Eagles fall to Ivorian Elephants in friendly rematch

By Dayo Awoniyi

The Nigeria U20 men’s national team were handed a 2-0 defeat by the Young Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire in their second friendly match in Abidjan on Friday evening.

The Ivorians avenged their earlier 2-0 loss to the Flying Eagles on Wednesday, dominating the match and limiting the visitors’ chances for much of the encounter.

Côte d’Ivoire took the lead in the 17th minute with Tape Yaya Kader finding the back of the net from open play. They doubled their advantage just eight minutes into the second half through a penalty kick converted by Isaac Cissé.

This match was a stark contrast to Wednesday’s clash, where the Flying Eagles emerged victorious with goals from Captain Daniel Bameyi and Divine Oliseh. The Young Elephants controlled play throughout Friday’s rematch, proving to be the stronger side.

Following the loss, the Flying Eagles are set to return to Abuja on Saturday, aiming to regroup and refocus for future challenges.
