Morocco has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

With the hosting of the 2024 edition rescheduled for 2025 in doubt, the North African country has been handed a big say with the biggest women’s football mundial on the continent after the 2022 edition – the Africa qualifiers for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

The Maghreb nation continues to put its name on women’s football map on the continent and across the globe.

In November, Morocco will also host the CAF Women’s Champions League for the second time after successfully hosting and winning the 2022 edition with AS FAR FC.

Relatively, the country will also stage the 2024 CAF Awards, marking another consecutive hosting of the showpiece earmarked to celebrate Africa’s biggest talents.

The huge investment of the Moroccan Football Federation is rubbing off on the national teams and clubs in like manner.

After reaching the final of the WAFCON on home soil in 2022 where South Africa claimed their maiden title, Moroccan club, AS FAR FC also won the CAF Women’s Champions League at home the same year.

A year later, the Atlas Lionesses, as the women’s national team, is fondly called, reached the Round of 16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in their debut appearance.

From age grade, senior national team to club levels, Morocco is emerging as the Meccah of not only women’s football but football generally as far as Africa is concerned.
