5 Super Eagles Players Set to Make European Debut

The European League season is poised to make a triumphant return this weekend after a prolonged break, and it brings with it a sense of anticipation as several Nigerian players prepare to make their debuts for new European clubs. This transition has taken place during the recent summer transfer window, and the footballing world awaits their performances with bated breath. Completesportsnigeria.com’s JOHNNY EDWARD spotlights the top five Super Eagles players who will be stepping onto the European stage for the first time on the weekend of August 11th, 12th, and Sunday, August 13th, 2017.

  1. Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City, England) Kelechi Iheanacho, the most expensive Nigerian player this summer at £25 million, returns to the English Premier League after two seasons with Manchester City. His primary task is to establish a partnership with Leicester City’s star striker, Jamie Vardy. During his debut for the Foxes, he replaced Matthew James with just eight minutes left in the match, offering only a glimpse of his potential impact.
  2. William Troost-Ekong (Bursaspor, Turkey) William Troost-Ekong, the Nigerian defender, has a point to prove as he joins Turkish side Bursaspor. Last season, he made only nine appearances for KAA Gent, returning from a two-year loan at FK Haugesund. Unfortunately, his league debut with Bursaspor on August 11th ended in defeat against Istanbul Basaksehir.
  3. Elderson Echiejile (Sivasspor, Turkey) Elderson Echiejile, Nigeria’s first-choice left-back, is eager to leave behind a disappointing season playing for two teams (Standard Liege and Sporting Gijón), with just 10 appearances to his name. Currently on a season-long loan at Sivasspor from AS Monaco, Echiejile is set to make his debut on August 12th, away to Akhisar Belediye Genclik Ve Spor.
  4. Imoh Ezekiel (Konyaspor, Turkey) Imoh Ezekiel, after a three-year stint in the Qatari League, makes his return to Europe, joining Konyaspor, the winners of the Turkish Super Cup. Barring any last-minute complications, Ezekiel is expected to make his league debut for Konyaspor away to Trabzonspor.
  5. Mikel Agu (Bursaspor, Turkey) The promising 21-year-old defensive midfielder, Mikel Agu, seeks regular action after securing a loan move to Bursaspor. Having made two unofficial appearances for the Super Eagles, Agu faces a new challenge in Turkey, where he hopes to make a lasting impact.
