Joseph Dosu, former Nigerian goalkeeper and Atlanta 1996 Gold medalist, has come to the defense of Victor Osimhen, stating that the striker should not bear the brunt of blame for Napoli’s elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona.

Napoli suffered a 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in the round of 16, leading to their exit from the prestigious tournament. Dosu emphasized that football is a collective effort, and it’s unfair to single out Osimhen for criticism when the entire team should shoulder responsibility.

According to Dosu, it is the duty of every player to elevate their performance and strive for positive results, especially when things aren’t going well on the field. He stressed that Osimhen consistently gives his best for Napoli, and the team’s defeat cannot be solely attributed to his individual performance.

“In football, it’s a team game where everybody should push hard to secure a positive outcome,” Dosu stated in remarks reported by Complete Sports.

“The fact that Osimhen didn’t score does not mean that he should be held responsible for their defeat against Barca.”

Dosu highlighted Osimhen’s dedication and effort for Napoli, urging his teammates to step up and support each other during challenging times.

With their Champions League journey cut short, Napoli will now turn their focus to their upcoming Serie A fixture against league leaders Inter Milan on Sunday, March 17.
