Rivers United chase Nigeria veteran John Ogu in ambitious midfield reinforcement

By Dayo Awoniyi

Rivers United are in advanced talks to sign former Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu, in what could be a bold statement of intent ahead of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season and their continental campaigns.

Sources within the Port Harcourt-based club have confirmed ongoing negotiations with the 37-year-old, as the former NPFL champions look to bolster their squad with experience and leadership.

The move is part of Rivers United’s wider strategy to create a balanced team blending youthful energy with seasoned professionals.

Ogu, known for his strength, composure, and defensive discipline in midfield, last featured for Maccabi Jaffa in Israel’s second division.

He boasts a well-travelled career that began with Akwa Starlets in Nigeria before moving abroad in 2006 to join Slovenian outfit Drava Ptuj.

His journey has since spanned clubs in Portugal and Spain, with his most successful spell coming at Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel, where he won multiple league titles and earned a reputation as a commanding presence in midfield.

If the deal is completed, Ogu’s arrival would mark one of the most high-profile acquisitions of the NPFL offseason, signaling Rivers United’s intent to compete aggressively both at home and in CAF competitions.

The club’s technical team is reportedly optimistic that Ogu’s experience and leadership will be invaluable in guiding a relatively young squad through the pressures of a demanding season, as they seek silverware and continental relevance.
