CAF Confederation Cup: Abia Warriors, Kwara United to get 0,000 each despite early exit

By Dayo Awoniyi

Despite crashing out in the preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup, Nigerian clubs Abia Warriors and Kwara United are set to receive $100,000 each as financial compensation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

CAF announced on Tuesday that clubs eliminated in the preliminary stages of its inter-club competitions will now receive an additional $50,000, supplementing the existing $50,000 participation grant. This brings the total payout for each early-exit team to $100,000.

Abia Warriors were eliminated after a narrow 2–1 aggregate loss to Mali’s Djoliba, while Kwara United—popularly known as the Afonja Warriors—fell 5–3 over two legs to Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.

The financial boost is expected to provide a cushion for both clubs, helping cover operational expenses and potentially aiding preparations for the upcoming Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The new incentive is part of CAF’s broader strategy to support clubs financially amid growing demands on teams participating in continental competitions.
