The Nigeria men’s national team are back in the country after picking a ticket for the Cote d’Ivoire 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following Sunday’s 3-2 victory against Sierra Leone in Monrovia.
The Super Eagles landed in Nigeria around 1:40am at the Muritala Mohammed International Airport via Air Peace chartered flight, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed on Monday morning.
Jose Peseiro’s side left it late to snatch the win over the Leone Stars at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Liberia.
The Nigerian team started that encounter brilliantly as Victor Osimhen continued his impressive scoring form this season, scoring a first-half brace to give his side a two-goal lead.
However, the Leone Stars pulled one goal back before half-time thanks to Mustapha Bundu and leveled through Augustus Kargbo with six minutes of regular time remaining.
Kelechi Iheanacho then struck five minutes into added time by pushing a low Zaidu Sanusi cross over the goal line.
With qualification secured, Nigeria join 13 other national teams that have guaranteed their spot for the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire slated for January 2024.
Nigeria will play its final qualifying match against São Tomé e Príncipe as they now top the group with 12 points from five games, followed by Guinea-Bissau with 10 points.
