Ghana’s Medeama send Remo Stars packing from CAF Champions League

Medeama SC of Ghana sealed a place in the second preliminary round of the 2023/2024 CAF Champions League after a 3-2 win over Nigerian side, Remo Stars in the return leg of the first preliminary round in Ikenne on Sunday.
The Ghanaian champions had won the first leg 1-0 thanks to Jonathan Sowah’s 22nd-minute goal and knew a win at home by two-goal margin will guarantee their progression but failed to achieve it.
Frack Mawuena had triple chances of putting the hosts in front in the first half but his efforts went wide on all occasions.
Adams Olamilekan and Akanni Qudus combined well in the area but the Adams’ shot was just inches off target in the 59th minute.
Two minutes later, goalkeeper Bankole Kayode spared the Sky Blue Stars blushes with a save to deny the visitors from scoring.
Adams Olamilekan hit the woodwork after beating the goalkeeper in the 64th minute.
Remo Stars’ incessant effort paid off as the deadlock was finally broken from a set piece eight minutes later.
The Ghanaian goalkeeper spilled the ball as it rolled into the net off a corner kick for the opener.
Sowah had a chance to score for Medeama but Bankole saved his effort to deny him a late goal in the 89th minute.
The host thought they had won the game in the additional minutes of the second half but Samuel Anakwe’s goal was ruled out from an offside.
With the game ending 1-1 on aggregate after 90 minutes, penalties were imminent to decide the winner.
Medeama won 3-2 on penalties as Sowah converted the deciding spot kick to take the Ghanaian champions into the next round where Horoya awaits the team.
