Nigeria international Ademola Lookman has shared his thoughts on being nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or, with the winners to be announced at the upcoming ceremony in Paris on October 28.
The Atalanta forward, who has enjoyed a standout year for both club and country, is the only African player on the 30-man shortlist for this year’s award.
Lookman’s impressive form includes a key role in Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, where he scored three goals in seven appearances, and a historic hat-trick in Atalanta’s 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Europa League final—a result that secured the club’s first-ever European silverware since 1963.
Reflecting on the recognition, Lookman told France Football that the nomination felt surreal.
“I thought it was crazy when I saw my name among the 30 candidates for the Ballon d’Or,” Lookman said. “It’s crazy, and being the only African player on the list makes it even more special. I’m really proud of it. It’s an honour knowing where I’ve come from.”
Lookman’s journey from his early days in the game to earning such a high-profile nomination highlights the hard work and dedication that has propelled him to the forefront of European football. His achievements this season have not only made waves at Atalanta but have also brought pride to his home nation and the entire African continent.
