2024 Ballon d’Or: Ademola Lookman happy to be Nigerian

Nigeria international Ademola Lookman has shared his immense pride at being the only African player on this year’s Ballon d’Or shortlist, a recognition that highlights his stellar performances for both Atalanta and the Nigerian national team.
The 26-year-old forward made history by becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in a UEFA Europa League final, leading Atalanta to their first major trophy since 1963.
His remarkable season also included a strong showing at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s run to the final, earning him a place on the prestigious Ballon d’Or shortlist.
In a recent interview with France Football, Lookman reflected on the significance of his nomination and his pride in representing Nigeria, despite his upbringing in London.
“In London, in Peckham and Camberwell, there were a lot of communities from different cultures and origins, and a big Nigerian community, too. It was like a ‘Little Lagos,’ and I have good memories there,” he said.
Lookman, who played for England’s youth teams, including helping them win the U-20 World Cup in 2017, explained his decision to choose Nigeria over England for his international career.
“I’ve understood it over time. Even though I played for England in the youth teams, I decided with my heart to play for the Super Eagles because I have a close and personal connection with the country,” he said.
This Ballon d’Or nomination not only acknowledges Lookman’s talent and hard work but also marks him as the eighth Nigerian footballer to receive such recognition, making it a historic moment for the Super Eagles.
As the only African representative on the list, Lookman’s achievement carries added significance, and his story is one of dedication, pride, and honoring his roots.
The winners will be officially announced at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris on October 28, where Lookman will represent Nigeria with pride, regardless of the outcome.
