AFCC: Nyima Nwagua reflects on Rivers United’s display against Diable Noirs
By Wale Mustapha
Nyima Nwagua says Rivers United are on course to finish as group winners despite securing a ticket to the quarterfinal stage of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday.
The former Kano Pillars man netted twice in the second half to ensure a 2-2 draw at home against Diable Noirs and guaranteed the Nigerian champions passage to the last eight of the continental club competition.
After Emmanuel Ampiah’s gifted the Congolese the first half lead, Nwagua scored twice in the spate of five minutes to turn the result in favor of the hosts  before Egalise Bassinga’s late effort snatched a point for the visitors.
Despite the home draw, the forward reflected on their unfortunate stalemate, while assuring the Pride of Rivers will double their efforts to ground out a positive result in their final group game against ASEC Mimosa.
“Its more of a team work than individual efforts that earned us this result, we told ourselves to give this game all we have so that we don’t go to Ivory Coast to struggle,” Nwagua told media.
“Unfortunately we couldn’t get the win, our opponents came with something else to change the approach to the game, but sometimes, if you don’t get the win you wanted you will have to settle for a draw which I think its okay for us.
“I’m happy to have gotten the two goals, good things about it is that it helped us to get the ticket we wanted but would have been happier if helped us to win.
“(Heading to Abidjan) in this situation, there’s no time for fun, we will approach it much better than how we play the last, we are going for the three points that’s our focus and we’ll see whatever comes from it,” he concluded.
