AFCON 2023: Kenneth Omeruo expresses strong will at Nigeria’s title quest

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria defender, Kenneth Omeruo is not putting pressure on his national team teammates to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

The West African giants started their campaign with an uninspiring 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea to the disappointment of football fans in Nigeria.

Despite the result, Omeruo says he wants the team to take each game as they come opining that the tournament has been a tough one for the big teams.

“We intend to take each game as they come,” Omeruo told Nigeriafootball.ng during the tea media day in Abidjan.

“If football was the way it was before we would have won the game against Equatorial Guinea by four to five goals. You can see other games as well. Egypt and other teams are struggling to beat these underdogs if we can say that.”

The Super Eagles will next face host Cote D’Ivoire on Thursday.

“For us, we have to focus on Cote D’Ivoire and try to win that game and not lose and then focus on the next game.” He continued.

“If we win the title at the end, then perfect.”

Historically, Nigeria has been unbeaten against Cote D’Ivoire en route to their past three AFCON titles.

Whether the team can avoid defeat against Louis Gasset’s side and put itself in contention for the title will be determined on the field of play on Thursday.
