Augustine Eguavoen berates poor character of current Super Eagles players
By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical director, Augustine Eguavoen has berated the national team players poor attitude to matches.
The Super Eagles were awful in their first two encounters in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as they could only grab two points from the games which attracted fans calling for the sack of the head coach Jose Peseiro.
Ex-international, Eguavoen advised the Nigeria players to change their attitude and mentality to matches and shouldn’t underrate any team in the continent.
The former Eagles coach believes the national team have what it takes to excel on the big stage and all matches shouldn’t be treated with hand gloves.
“I talk about character and changing the mentality. When we play against minors ‘small teams’ this is always our performance. Even when we play against big teams, we intend to raise our game,” Eguavoen was quoted by BSN Sports.
“We should approach every game like a final game. Once you do that, I don’t think there will be any problem. We have all it takes. I’m not being political. I have been a professional all my life and I will try to speak the truth. I’m not perfect.
“If you just change that mindset, the way you play against Ghana, Brazil, and Tunisia, that’s the same way you have to approach small countries as well.”
The Super Eagles are third in group C of the Africa category of the World Cup qualifiers behind second place South Africa (Three points) and table toppers Rwanda (Four points).
