Nigeria star Asisat Oshoala is excited about her nomination for the 2023 Ballon d’Or after the FC Barcelona forward earned the nomination for the second year in the running.
After her 16th-placed finish last year, she will vie with 29 other women’s football players for the prize and remained the only African woman to be nominated for the gong which is a feat to be proud of.
“I’m very happy about the nomination and excited for what’s to come,” Oshoala told The MTN Super Falcons Show.
“I had a tough end to the season, but I think I worked last year and I’m really happy I was able to get on the nomination list again for another year of hard work.”
The Ballon d’Or is an annual award to honour the best players in Europe as presented by France Football Magazine. Oshoala won the Spanish league and ultimately the UEFA Women’s Champions League with the Catalan side.
With the Super Falcons, the former FC Robo and Rivers Angels star scored the winning goal during the team’s 3-2 win over 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-host, Australia at the global women’s football mundial this year.
With her nomination alongside that of Napoli forward, Victor Osimhne for the award in the men’s category, Nigeria became the first African country to have players nominated for the award in men’s and women’s categories.
The likes of Finidi George, Daniel Smokachi, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Victor Ikpeba, and Sunday Oliseh are the other Nigerian players to have earned Ballon d’Or nominations.
