By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The former Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi praised the organisers of the Sheroes Cup after the completion of the sixth edition last weekend in Abuja.

Edo Queens reclaimed the title after a 1-0 win over Naija Ratels FC and Akinwunmi urged other like minds to follow in the footsteps of the organisers, Ratels Sports Foundation in the bid to encourage women’s football.

“I want to give kudos to the organisers, Ratels Sports Foundation for this tournament and sustaining it,” Akinwunmi told journalists.

“Looking at the girls in each team, I can see that many of them have grown from where they were to greater heights. This is a tournament that should be emulated.

“We need to have this kind of competition across the country. It has already encouraged a lot of people in various States. In a few years time, you will see the essence of that. At the moment, this is the leading light and I implore people of like minds to follow up. This is the time for women’s football and for people to take it seriously. ”

Since its inception in 2019, the tournament has played a pivotal role in preparing teams for the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership and international competitions such as the CAF Women’s Champions League.
