In a resounding resurgence, Willem II Tilburg’s seasoned Nigerian striker, Bartholomew Ogbeche, is harboring aspirations of donning the Super Eagles jersey once again at the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The 33-year-old forward, who notably graced the Nigerian squad in the 2002 World Cup, is fueling his dream with a remarkable goal-scoring spree in the Dutch Eredivisie this season.
Ogbeche, a surprise inclusion in the 2002 World Cup squad, has been a pivotal figure in Willem II Tilburg’s campaign, showcasing a dazzling form that has seen him net an impressive seven goals in just six games. His latest goal, securing a 1-1 draw against NAC Breda, not only bolstered his individual tally but also etched his name in the annals of the club’s history. Ogbeche became the second player for Willem II to score in four consecutive Eredivisie games, a feat previously achieved by Samuel Armenteros during the 2014/15 season.
Expressing his fervent desire, Ogbeche affirmed, “I dream of playing for my country at the World Cup. I’m scoring again and I am sharp again.” Despite his last international appearance dating back to 2004, the veteran striker remains optimistic about a potential comeback, asserting, “There’s still more time to prove that before the World Cup.”
Reflecting on his recent performance, Ogbeche humbly remarked, “I was at the right place at the right time during the game, and I was unlucky not to have scored a second.” The draw leaves Willem II in the 14th position with 15 points from 15 games, maintaining a slender one-point lead over NAC Breda. As Ogbeche continues to dazzle on the field, his World Cup aspirations add an intriguing narrative to the unfolding Eredivisie season.
