Brown Ideye refutes misquotes, denies calling for jail of struggling ex-footballers

Former Nigeria striker Brown Ideye has strongly denied reports suggesting he called for retired footballers facing financial hardship to be jailed.
The former West Bromwich Albion striker, who recently announced his international retirement, also took to social media to caution fans against hasty conclusions, posting: “School is not a scam. Try to read and understand the whole story before jumping into conclusions.”
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner came under criticism last week after remarks he made during an online discussion were misinterpreted and widely circulated.
In a statement titled “Setting the Record Straight”, the 34-year-old dismissed the claims as false, misleading, and damaging to his image.
“I would never suggest punitive action against anyone facing financial struggles,” Ideye clarified. “My focus has always been on supporting athletes with resources, mentorship, and retirement planning.”
He also urged the media to exercise greater responsibility in reporting sensitive issues, stressing that conversations about players’ welfare should be framed with “empathy and solutions.”
The controversy stemmed from Ideye’s comments advising young players to prioritize savings and prepare early for life after football.
His remarks coincided with Taribo West’s criticism of football authorities for neglecting retired stars during the funeral of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai.
“I urge players to save from day one, no matter how small, and build a strong support system,” Ideye advised.
