Chairman of the Interim Management Committee Gbenga Elegbeleye has tipped Rivers United to get past Young Africans of Tanzania in the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup.
The Pride of Rivers are Nigeria’s sole representative in the continental inter-club competitions and finished second in Group B and will play with Group D winners, Young Africans in the quarter-final after Wedesday’s draw in Cairo.
In 2021, both teams met in the Champions League with the Nigerian side winning both legs by 1-0. The familiar foes meet again with the first leg set to hold in Nigeria on 23rd April and the second leg a week later on 30th April.
Reacting to the draw, the former Nigeria Sports Commission boss believes Rivers United have been getting better with every game even as he stressed that the club have been strengthened by the domestic league.
“Rivers United will definitely get past the Young Africans of Tanzania. They are getting better and better with every game and the beauty of it is that their NPFL games are helping them do well in the continent,” Elegbeleye told media.
“I was with Rivers United in Côte d’Ivoire and I must tell you I was impressed with the level of organization in the club.”
The winner of the quarter-final clash between Rivers United and Young Africa will trade tackles with either Pyramids of Egypt or Marumo Gallants of South Africa.
