By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Rivers United secured a slim first leg advantage in the first leg of their quarterfinal clash in the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup after a 1-0 win over holders and Algerian side, USM Alger in Uyo on Sunday.
Augustine Okejepha scored the winning goal for the Price of Rivers at Godswill Akpabio Stadium to put the country’s sole representative on the continent in early lead in the Akwa Ibom State capital.
He was set up by Sadiq Adamu in the tenth minute of play for the lone goal of the match and held on to the end.
The Nigerian side will have to avoid defeat in the return leg.
The return leg is scheduled for 10pm on April 7, 2024, at the Stade Omar Hammadi, Algier.
In 2023, Rivers United crashed out at the same stage in this competition against Young Africans of Tanzania.
History beckons for the sole Nigerian representatives should the 2023 champions make it to the last four and final.
The last Nigerian side to make it to the final of either the CAF Confederation Cup or the CAF Cup was the defunct Dolphins of Port Harcourt.
Since Dolphins FC were merged into Rivers United and will hope to reach the final of this season’s competition.
