CAF Champions League: Remo Stars receive boost as Victor Mbaoma returns for Sundowns Clash

By Dayo Awoniyi

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Remo Stars have been handed a significant boost ahead of their crucial CAF Champions League second preliminary round showdown with South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, as striker Victor Mbaoma has been declared fit for action.

Head coach Daniel Ogunmodede confirmed that Mbaoma, who has been recovering from an injury sustained on the opening day of the season, is now fully integrated into training and available for selection ahead of the high-stakes tie.

“Victor is back in training and will be ready for the game against Sundowns,” Ogunmodede told reporters.

“His experience and presence will give us more attacking options and confidence in the final third.”

Timely Reinforcement for the Sky Blue Stars

Mbaoma, a former APR FC (Rwanda) and Enyimba FC forward, missed Remo Stars’ first-round victory over US Zilimadjou of Comoros but is expected to play a vital role as the club seeks to secure a historic first-ever group stage qualification in Africa’s premier club competition.

Renowned for his clinical finishing and physical presence in the box, Mbaoma’s return adds depth and quality to Remo’s frontline as they prepare to face one of the most formidable teams on the continent.

Uphill Battle Against African Giants

Mamelodi Sundowns, the 2016 CAF Champions League winners, are a seasoned side with deep continental pedigree and recent dominance in the DStv Premiership. The South African giants have also invested heavily in squad depth and infrastructure, making them strong favourites.

However, Remo Stars—known for their disciplined tactics and vibrant attacking play under Ogunmodede—are hoping to cause an upset and write a new chapter in Nigerian club football history.
