CAF Confederation Cup: Kwara United depart for Ghana against Asante Kotoko

By Wale Mustapha
Kwara United will on Wednesday depart Nigeria for Ghana as they gear up for their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round first-leg clash against Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.
The Harmony Boys will travel with a 27-man contingent, flying out via the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, before heading to Accra, where Sunday’s highly anticipated fixture will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Head coach Tunde Sanni and his technical crew have been fine-tuning preparations in Ilorin, with focus on ensuring the club makes a strong impression on the continent in what will be only their second-ever CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
While the first leg venue is settled, the location of the return fixture remains uncertain.
Kwara United are still awaiting confirmation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on whether they can use the Rashidi Yekini Stadium in Ilorin, which has undergone upgrades in recent months.
Should approval not be granted, the club is expected to adopt the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta as an alternative home ground.
The two-legged tie promises to be a stern test for the Nigerian Federation Cup holders, with Kotoko boasting rich continental pedigree as multiple-time African champions. However, Kwara United’s young and ambitious squad will fancy their chances of upsetting the odds.
Meanwhile, Abia Warriors, Nigeria’s other representatives in this year’s competition, will also begin their campaign this weekend as the country seeks to strengthen its footprint on the continental stage.
