CAF confirm Cote d’Ivoire as 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League host

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) have confirmed Ivory Coast as the hosts for the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League on Thursday.
The announcement was made after CAF Executive Committee meeting held in Algiers on Thursday as the Moroccan Football Federation withdrew from its bidding race to reclaim the hosting rights, paving ways for the Ivorians.
Morocco had been favoured to land the hosting rights for the third edition but President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fauzi Lekja confirmed the withdrawal of the North African country from hosting the event.
The development is significant as it all but ensures that the next finals, which will actually take place outside the North Africa for the first time in its history in 2023, will also be held in the West African nation for the first.
With Ivory Coast set to host the upcoming 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the West African country will see the women’s club competition as a huge platform to prepare for the men’s biggest showpiece.
The Ivorians had played host to the last two West African Football Union Zone B (WAFU-B) Qualifiers will now host the CAF Women’s Champions League to test-run facilities ahead of next year’s African Cup of Nations.
The host nation’s champions alongside holders, ASFAR FC, and six zonal champions will participate in the tournament, including from WAFU-A, WAFU-B (West Africa), UNAF (North Africa), UNIFFAC (Central Africa), CECAFA (East Africa), and COSAFA (Southern Africa) for the third edition of the only club competition in Africa.
Mamelodi Sundowns won the inaugural edition held in Egypt in 2021 before the South Africans were dethroned by ASFAR on the latter home soil in Rabat, Morocco in the second edition held in November 2022.
