Nigeria Football Federation are reportedly in search of a replacement for the head coach of the country’s senior national team as Jose Peseiro’s contract in charge of the Super Eagles expire in June 2023.

With few days to the Portuguese’s contract expiration, NigeriaFootball.ng understands that it’s possible that Peseiro will vacant his his role as the head coach over the likelihood of not earning a contract extension.

Since Peseiro took over in May 2022, the Super Eagles have struggled to make progress, with the squad winning just three of their nine matches, while losing six times in the process.
His biggest achievement in charge, comes from guiding the three-time African champion to its highest-scoring fixture in history, pummeling Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 in an AFCON qualifier in June 2022.
However, the Portuguese is anticipated to continue leading the Super Eagles for the final two AFCON qualifying matches against Sao Tome & Principe in September and Sierra Leone in June.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) are reportedly meeting with the representatives of former Romanian football star Adrian Mutu, and other candidates as a part of plans to find Peseiro successor.
According to OwnGoalNigeria, Pitso Mosimane, the former head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, or Mutu, who has been in charge of six-time Romanian champions Rapid Bucuresti since March 2022, are among the listed candidates.
However, further checks suggested that Mutu’s representatives are already in Nigeria and are actively pursuing a verbal agreement with the NFF.
Since his retirement from successful spells with Chelsea, Inter Milan, Juventus, Fiorentina, Parma and Ajaccio, the Romanian has served as an assistant coach, a club general manager, a sporting director and a head coach at Rapid.
He led Romanian Superliga side Rapid to a ninth-place finish in the 2021/22 season, winning seven of the 10 games.
