CAF Women’s Champions League: Edo Queens make history in Group B draw with Masar

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership champions, Edo Queens, played out a 0-0 draw with Egyptian champions, FC Masar, in both side’s second Group B encounter at the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League in Casablanca on Wednesday.

An organized FC Masar, who had a similar touchline situation with their Nigerian counterparts, put up a gallant display by denying the attack force of the Benin City-based side from finding the back of the net.

Chances from Folashade Ijamilusi in both halves, as well as double headers from Comfort Folorunsho, could not change the scoreline.

The introduction of Chukwuamaka Osigwe also gave some attaching bite to Moses Aduku’s side but the scoreline remained goalless after 90 minutes.

Edo Queens topped the log with four points after two games on a superior goal difference ahead of FC Masar, which also had the same points after beating holders Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies 1-0 in their opener.

Edo Queens, on the other hand, defeated Commercial Bank of Ethiopia FC 3-0 in their first game.

With the 0-0 draw, Edo Queens set double records for Nigerian teams in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

They became the first Nigerian side to go unbeaten after two group games.

The team also entered the record books as the first Nigerian team in the competition to keep two clean sheets in their first two group games.

They have a daunting task of avoiding defeat against holders Mamelodi Sundown, which had three points in their last group game and can ensure that the South African side bows out of the tournament in the group stage.
