By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
After its 3-0 loss to Diables Noirs of Congo last weekend in the CAF Confederation Cup opening group match, Nigeria Champions, Rivers United returned to Nigeria.
The team on Tuesday touched down at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos by 3:25 pm.
Stanley Eguma’s side will return to its base from Lagos ahead of its second group game with Ivorian side, Asec Mimosa next weekend.
The tie will take place at 4 pm on Sunday, 19 February 2023 in the city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
Goals from Carl Wunda, Jaures Maudsly Ngombe, and Domi Jaures Massoumou condemned the Port Harcourt-based side to a 3-0 loss on Sunday.
The defeat put Rivers United at the bottom of Group B without any points after a game.
Diables Noirs top the group with three points ahead of Asec Mimosa and Motema Pembe (Democratic Republic of Congo) both with a point as they played out a 0-0 draw weekend.
Rivers is the only Nigerian side on the continent after the other three teams crashed out.
Remo Stars and Kwara United crashed out of the CAF Confederation Cup alongside Plateau United which also dropped to the second-tier club competition alongside Rivers from the Champions League.
The last Nigerian club to win any continental title was Enyimba in 2003 and 2004 after which Dolphins (CAF Confederation Cup) and Heartland FC (CAF Champions League) reached the final but couldn’t clinch continental titles.
