By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria midfielder Christy Ucheibe netted her first goal of the 2024/2025 Portuguese women’s top flight season during Benfica’s 4-1 victory over Estoril Praia on Friday.

Cristina Martin-Prieto Gutierrez gave Benfica the lead in the eighth minute. Estoril Praia equalized shortly before halftime with a goal from Sara Brasil.

In the 78th minute, Daniela Santos inadvertently redirected a cross into her own net, allowing Benfica to regain the lead. Gutierrez then extended Benfica’s advantage with her second goal of the match in the 83rd minute.

Substitute Christy Ucheibe, who came on for Joana Silva in the 59th minute, added the fourth goal for Benfica with a header from a cross by Lais in the 85th minute, marking her first league goal of the season.

With two wins from their opening two games, Benfica sits in second place in the league, level on points with Sporting CP.

Next, Benfica will face Swedish side Hammarby in the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) Qualifiers on September 18, followed by a league match against Famalicao on September 22, 2024.
