By Wale Mustapha
Nigeria hopeful, Chuba Akpom is not looking like slowing down on his goalscoring form with Middlesbrough as he was instrumental in their 3-1 win at Sheffield United on Wednesday.
Akpom has been in scintillating goal scoring form since Michael Carrick was appointed as the new Boro manager.
He scored Boro’s first goal, his 17th of the season, in the famous win at Bramal Lane which set the tone for a comeback win.
Akpom’s first half goal canceled out Oliver McBurnie early goal for Sheffield and the 27-year-old forward who still relish to play for Nigeria went close to get his second goal but was denied by the Blades keeper Wesley Foderingham.
Cameron Archer scored two second half goals to win the duel for Boro who have cemented their third position on the Championship table with 54 points in 32 games and can then aim to dragging the second spot the Sheffield United.
Since the start of 2023, the Akpom has scored six goals in eight games across all competitions for Boro.
He has also opened up a four-goal cushion in the scorers’ chart ahead of his closest challenger, Coventry City’s Viktor Gyökeres who is on 13 goals and followed by Burnley’s Nathan Tella (12), Luton Town’s Carlton Morris (12) and Hull City’s Óscar Estupiñán (12).
