Confederations Cup: CAF announces date for Rivers United quarter-final games

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has finalized the schedule for Rivers United’s quarter-final match in the 2023/2024 Confederation Cup.

Rivers United, Nigeria’s sole representative in CAF Interclub competitions, were drawn against holders USM Alger last Tuesday.

The quarter-final matches will follow a two-legged format, with the first leg fixtures confirmed for Saturday, 31 March, and the return leg set for Saturday, 07 April.

To kick off the quarter-finals, defending champions USM Alger will travel to Uyo to face Rivers United in an afternoon fixture at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

This marks the second consecutive time that Rivers United has advanced to the quarter-finals of the second-tier CAF Interclub competition.

In the previous season, the Ugandan side Young Africans eliminated the former Nigerian champions.

Nigeria continues to seek its first Confederation Cup title since the tournament was renamed from the CAF Cup.

The closest a Nigerian team came to winning was in 2005 when Dolphins reached the final but were defeated by Moroccan side FAR Rabat.
