Delta State Government intervenes as Warri Wolves sack Aluma

By Dayo Awoniyi

The Delta State Government has taken decisive action to arrest Warri Wolves’ poor start to the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, announcing the suspension of Head Coach Napoleon Aluma with immediate effect.

The move comes amid mounting pressure from fans, stakeholders, and government officials over the club’s underwhelming performances this term.

The Seasiders have struggled to find form, sitting in the lower half of the NPFL standings after six rounds of matches.

Aluma, who was brought in to steer the club back to stability and competitiveness, has overseen a series of inconsistent results — including a damaging recent home defeat that further fueled frustration among supporters.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Delta State Government — principal financiers of the club — described the decision as a necessary step to “reset the team’s direction” and avert a full-blown crisis.

“The suspension of Coach Napoleon Aluma is part of broader efforts to revive the fortunes of Warri Wolves and ensure the team returns to winning ways,” the statement read.

“This is not just about results, but about restoring pride, professionalism, and ambition.”

An interim technical committee has been appointed to oversee preparations for the club’s upcoming Matchday Seven fixture, as the search for a permanent replacement begins.

Warri Wolves, former campaigners in the CAF Confederation Cup and once a formidable force in the NPFL, now face a critical juncture in their season.

With expectations high and time running out, the club must find stability quickly to avoid another year of underachievement.
