Derbies Take Centre Stage as NWFL Premiership Matchday Seven Kicks Off

Three derbies are expected to take centre stage as the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Matchday Seven gets underway on Wednesday.

Confluence Queens will face Nasarawa Amazons in a North Central derby, followed by two South West derbies as Osun Babes host Sunshine Queens, while FC Robo Queens make a short trip to Ikenne to face Remo Stars Ladies.

Group A

Adamawa Queens vs Bayelsa Queens

In Makwada, Adamawa Queens face a daunting task against defending champions Bayelsa Queens, who are yet to drop a point this season.

The hosts enter this clash on the back of consecutive defeats, which ended their three-match unbeaten run.

The last meeting between both sides last season ended in a 1-1 draw, after Bayelsa Queens had secured a 3-0 victory in Yenagoa.

Rivers Angels vs Heartland Queens

Bayelsa Queens ended Rivers Angels’ perfect start to the season last week in Ozoro.

The Port Harcourt-based side will be aiming to return to winning ways when they host Heartland Queens.

Heartland Queens, meanwhile, recovered from consecutive defeats to record a 2-0 victory over Ibom Angels last week.

Both sides met twice during the 2022/23 season, with Rivers Angels edging the encounters by narrow margins — a 1-0 win following a 0-0 draw in Owerri.

Their most recent meeting, during the 2023/24 Super Six, ended in a 1-1 draw, denting Rivers Angels’ title aspirations.

Edo Queens vs Pacesetter Queens

For the first time in top-flight history, Edo Queens and debutants Pacesetter Queens will trade tackles in Benin City.

The hosts have won their last four matches following their opening-day 3-2 loss to Bayelsa Queens.

Pacesetter Queens, on the other hand, have managed just one draw and five losses so far this season.

A positive result for the visitors would signal a major upset, while a victory for Moses Aduku’s side would further strengthen their push for a Super Six place.

Ibom Angels vs Ekiti Queens

Another first-ever top-flight meeting will see Ekiti Queens make a long trip to Uyo to face Ibom Angels.

The Orange Ladies have lost their last four matches after going unbeaten in their opening two games.

Ekiti Queens, however, are enjoying a decent run of form with back-to-back wins and will be hoping to record three consecutive victories for the first time in the top flight.

Former Super Falcons head coach Edwin Okon faces a tough task to guide Ibom Angels back to winning ways against a Jacob Vandhi-tutored Ekiti Queens side.

Group B

Confluence Queens vs Nasarawa Amazons

In Iyahmo, Confluence Queens welcome their North Central rivals, Nasarawa Amazons.

Confluence Queens ended a five-match winless run with a 3-0 victory over Dannaz Ladies in Lagos last week, snapping a sequence of four defeats and a draw.

Nasarawa Amazons, under the guidance of Christopher Danjuma, are one of three unbeaten teams in the league alongside Bayelsa Queens and FC Robo Queens.

The Solid Babes have recorded four wins and two draws from six matches.

In their last 10 league meetings, Nasarawa Amazons have won five, Confluence Queens three, while two encounters ended goalless.

Dannaz Ladies vs Ahudiyannem Queens

In another inaugural top-flight encounter, Dannaz Ladies will host Ahudiyannem Queens in Lagos.

Dannaz Ladies have lost their last four matches following a win and a draw in their opening two league games.

Ahudiyannem Queens are still searching for their maiden top-flight victory in their debut season, having recorded two draws and four losses.

A win here would mark a historic breakthrough for the visitors.

Osun Babes vs Sunshine Queens

Osun Babes welcome Sunshine Queens to the Lanreleke Stadium, Ile-Ogbo, in a South West derby.

The Imole Queens have won two of their six matches, alongside three defeats and a draw, under U-17 national team coach Bankole Olowookere.

Sunshine Queens, meanwhile, have recorded one win, three draws, and two losses.

Their last league meeting during the 2020/21 season ended in a 1-0 victory for Osun Babes.

Delta Queens vs Abia Angels

Former league champions Delta Queens will face Abia Angels in Asaba.

The hosts are on a fine run of three consecutive wins after suffering two losses and a draw in their opening three games.

Abia Angels’ form guide reads two wins, two losses, and two draws after six matches.

Delta Queens have won one of the last three league meetings between both sides, with the other two ending in goalless draws.

Remo Stars Ladies vs FC Robo Queens

The second South West derby of the matchday will see Remo Stars Ladies face FC Robo Queens in Ikenne.

Remo Stars Ladies have won two of their six matches, recording three draws and one defeat.

FC Robo Queens, on the other hand, boast a perfect record, having won all six of their matches so far this season.

The last two league meetings between both sides during the 2023/24 campaign were closely contested, with home teams claiming narrow victories — FC Robo Queens winning 2-1 in Lagos, while Remo Stars Ladies edged a 1-0 victory in Ikenne.
