Nigeria forward, Desire Oparanozie has appealed for increased funding for the Nigeria Women’s Football League to improve the quality of competition and women’s talent growth at all levels in the country.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 2023 SheFootball Cup in Lagos, the Wuhan Giangda star was one of the stars, who featured at the annual conference organised by former international Ayisat Yusuf-Aromire.
The NWFL Premiership season kicked off before its men’s counterparts for consecutive seasons and the former Dijon captain craved more investments in growing the domestic league to one of the best in the world.
“I mean then and now there have been undoubtedly a lot of changes. I mean there’s still room for improvement, but we can’t compare where we are now to where we were then,” Oparanozie told
nigeriafootball.ng.
“You know, there has been a lot of improvement, and thanks to Madam Aisha for the day. She’s really done a great job before becoming a board member and I hope whoever will take it over from her will also do an amazing job.
“We need to, you know, continue investing in our league and our Women’s League to be able to grow some more. So far so good, but I still think there’s room for improvement.”
Meanwhile, Oparanozie, who performed the ceremonial kick-off before the final match between eventual Championship, Lakeside Queens and Royaltoms Queens at the 2023 SheFootball Cup at Legacy Pitch, National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos to cheer up young women’s footballers.
“My advice, like always for young players, they should stay committee, stay focused, and whatever they set their hands to do in life, if it’s football, they should concentrate and make sure nothing distracts them from playing.”
