Edo Queens claim first-ever Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament title

Edo Queens has emerged as champions of the 2023 Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament after a 4-3 win on penalties over 2021 winners, Bayelsa Queens in the final match in Benin City, on Wednesday.

Both sides were unbeaten ahead of the final match at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, as Edo Queens goalkeeper, Inyene Etim went into the action immediately after kick-off.

Etim saved a free kick which resulted in a corner kick leading to the opener for the Prosperity Girls thanks to Blessing Abiola.

The goal spurred Moses Aduku’s side into action in search of the leveler which came before the end of the first half.

From a tight angle, Eunice Goodwin equalised in the 41st minute and Edo Queens had the chance to win the game from the penalty spot but Suliat Abideen missed the penalty.

With both sides not separated after 90 minutes, penalties were imminent to decide the winner.

Edo Queens emerged victorious 4-3 on penalties to win the women’s football pre-season tournament for the first time.

Three different champions have emerged from the three-year-old pre-season tournament as Bayelsa Queens and FC Robo Queens won the first two editions.

The team thus won consecutive pre-season tournaments after clinching the 2023 Sheroes Cup title in Abuja.

Meanwhile, Robo Queens Folashade Ijamilusi won the top goal scorer prize attached with 100,000 Naira.

Edo Queens captain Suliat Abideen emerged as the Most Valuable Player and also smiled home with 100,000 Naira cash prize.

Title winning coach, Aduku won the coach of the tournament after guiding the team to success.

Eariler, Nigerian league winners, Delta Queens had earlier beat Remo Stars Ladies to secure the bronze medal.
