England match is very important to my career – Nigeria midfielder Christy Ucheibe

By Samuel Ahmadu

Nigeria midfielder Christy Ucheibe is aware that Monday’s Women’s World Cup Round of 16 clash with England is important for his side, but she has stressed she does think it is more important to her career journey.

Nigeria face the Three Lionesses in bid to reach the quarterfinal for the second time in their history, who visit the Brisbane Stadium on Monday. While a victory will not be enough to overhaul the principality side, unless it is of a truly astonishing variety, a defeat could leave their historic Round of 16 upset hopes in the balance.

Nigeria won the previous two meetings between the nations, although lost previous meeting in the tournament back in 1995 and the Nigeria international is aware of the threat they carry.

“It’s a very important match, it’s true,” Uchiebe told NigeriaFootball. “They are the European champions and we have often suffered against European teams at major competitions, especially at the World World Cup. If we win, it’s a big blow to England and Europe, and that makes it very crucial for us.”

:I’m really happy to be able to help the team – and the tournament is not over yet, I hope to keep playing like this,” she said.

“This game is very important to my career. We need to prove to the world the stuff we are made as Nigerians because we have very high standards and we know that playing for Nigeria requires a big heart. I’m here to win games and I still want to do that in Australia.”
