Etim Esin Opens Up on World Cup Snub, Reveals Battle with Depression

Former Nigeria midfielder Etim Esin has shared the emotional pain he endured after missing out on Nigeria’s squad for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, revealing that the disappointment led him into depression and drug abuse.

Speaking on the Play Zone Podcast, Esin described the omission as the biggest regret of his career, admitting that he struggled deeply to cope with the heartbreak of missing football’s biggest stage.

“My greatest regret was not playing at the World Cup. That led me to a lot of depression. I nearly committed suicide because I had a dream,” he said.

Esin also referenced a promise allegedly made by Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, who had assured him of a leadership role in the team before his incarceration altered the course of events.

“Abiola promised me if I win the election, you will captain the team to the World Cup. You know this life in a split second can just turn around. Abiola was locked up. World Cup was the only dream I had,” he added.

Reflecting on the emotional weight of the moment, Esin revealed that even the late Peter Rufai acknowledged his absence during the tournament.

“Even the late Peter Rufai, because he captained the team against Argentina, asked where the African Maradona was,” Esin said, underlining how painful the experience was for him.

He admitted that the disappointment pushed him down a destructive path, including substance abuse, as he battled depression.

Despite his absence, Nigeria’s outing at the tournament remains historic, with the Super Eagles impressing on their debut by progressing from the group stage before narrowly losing to Italy in the Round of 16.
