Ex-Italy coach highlights Osimhen’s lack of impact in crucial Champions League tie

In the aftermath of Napoli’s exit from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of FC Barcelona, former Italy head coach Arigo Sacchi has voiced criticism against Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen for his underwhelming display during the match.
Despite playing a pivotal role in Napoli’s 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the first leg of the round of 16, Osimhen failed to replicate his performance in the return leg, which saw Barcelona emerge victorious with a 4-2 aggregate scoreline.
Sacchi expressed surprise at Osimhen’s lack of involvement in the game, particularly considering his stature as one of Napoli’s key players. He noted that Osimhen, along with another anticipated player, failed to make a significant impact on the match.
“What surprised me the most was the little involvement of Osimhen,” Sacchi remarked in his column for La Gazzetta dello Sport. “It’s true that they didn’t get much service, but at the same time, they didn’t move much and they did it in the wrong way, so it was easy for opponents to stop them.”
The critique primarily focused on Osimhen’s limited movement and ineffective positioning, which made it easier for Barcelona’s defenders to neutralize his threat throughout the game. Despite managing just one shot on target, Osimhen struggled to assert himself against his opponents, including 17-year-old debutant Pau Cubarsi.
As Napoli reflects on their Champions League disappointment, Sacchi’s remarks underscore the need for Osimhen to elevate his performance and make a more significant impact in crucial fixtures moving forward.
