Former Confluence Queens forward bags brace in Denmark

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Fortuna Hjorring will surely have a happy trip home after a 3-0 win over Thisted FC in the 2022/23 Denmark Elitedivisionen match thanks to a brace from Nigerian forward Joy Omewa.

Signe Hansen Baatrup scored the first goal of the keenly contested first half to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

It took a tactical substitution from Fortuna’s coach Brian Sørensen in the 70th minute to change the tide of a tough encounter as Omewa replaced Camilla Larsen.

The substitution proved to be a thoroughbred tactical decision as the substitute, the former Confluence Queens forward took the game beyond the reach of the hosts.

The Nigerian forward scored two goals in the space of two minutes between the 84th and 86th minutes to guarantee Fortuna Hjorring away win.

“It was a great victory for us and I am happy that I scored. I have been longing to score two goals and happy that I scored them,” Omewa told Nigeriafootball.ng.

The highest goalscorer of the 2020 Flying Officers Cup admitted she did not imagine she will score from the bench.

“It was a great victory for us today and I am happy that I scored. I want to thank my teammates for their support and gratitude,” she continued.

“The first goal, the defender made a mistake and I got the ball. My teammate gave me the pass and I put it into the net to score the second goal. It’s so good and going to be a good ride home. We are happy for the victory.”

The brace were Omewa’s first goals of the season for Fortuna Hjorring as the win lifted her side to the third position on the log with 15 points after nine games.

The victory secured back-to-back triumphs for Fortuna Hjorring after the previous win over Aarhus (0-1) which ended the team’s two-match winless run.

Omewa will be hoping to continue with her fine form when Fortuna Hjorring will next face Kolding on October 30.
