Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan tips Victor Osimhen for CAF Player of the Year award

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has backed Victor Osimhen to win the 2023 African Player of the Year award.
According to the Black Stars legend, the 24-year-old Super Eagles striker has done enough in the year under review to beat off competition from everyone else in the race for the gong.
The 37-year-old was in Nigeria to celebrate the 50th birthday of Super Eagles legend, Austin Jay Jay Okocha.
Osimhen played a crucial role in Napoli’s Scudetto success last season scoring 26 goals in 32 league appearances for the Partenopei.
The Nigerian also recorded five more goals for the Naples club in the UEFA Champions League.
The ‘Ijaya Olusosun’ as he is fondly called won the golden boot award in Italy after leading Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years.
The Super Eagles star was the first African and Nigerian to win the top scorer award in the Italian top flight.
However, he is set to face stiff competition for the African Player of the Year award from Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez, who won the treble with Manchester City last season.
Another candidate with a high chance of annexing the gong is Yassine Bounou, who helped Morocco reach the semi-finals of the Qatar 2022 World Cup and also won the Europa League with Sevilla.
Sadio Mane is the current holder of the gong, after leading Senegal to Africa Cup of Nations success in 2022 as well as winning domestic trophies with Liverpool.
The Senegalese attacker plies his trade in Saudi Arabia following a tough spell in Germany with Bayern Munich.
Gyan claimed the striker is the right candidate to win the best player award as his individual and club achievements supersede that of his other competitors and he deserves the award.
“For me, he deserves it,” he told Brilla FM. “As a striker and seeing what he is doing, for the first time in over 30 years, winning the league with Napoli. He deserves it.”
