Guinea Bissau vs Nigeria Preview: Super Eagles attempt to end losing streak in Bissau

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria’s senior men national team face Guinea Bissau on Monday in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers as the Super Eagles will have a lot to ponder on after last Friday’s 1-0 loss to the same opponent.

The loss was the first time that the Wild Dogs will defeat Super Eagles after two competitive meetings. Both sides first met at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon which took place last year with Nigeria securing a 2-0 win to top its group.

Monday’s clash will be the third competitive encounter between both sides. Jose Peseiro’s side is on four games losing streak since its 10-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe last year.

The Nigerians had lost games against Algeria, Costa Rica, Portugal, and Guinea-Bissau, with the Guinean loss ending its four-match winless streak with a 1-0 win over Nigeria on Friday at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Mama Balde’s 29th-minute goal separated both sides which took Guinea Bissau to the top of Group A.

Peseiro’s side for the first time since the Portuguese took over as coach lost a competitive game after three games.

The Super Eagles will have to redeem itself as last Friday’s result ensured that it dropped to the second position in Group A with six points, a point behind Guinea Bissau.

Sao Tome and Principe will later on Sunday host Sierra Leone with a win for the latter opening up the group.

Sierra Leone has two points while Sao Tome and Principe have a point as the result of Monday’s game at the Estadio 24 de Setembro will give a perfect picture of Group B with two games to go.

The top two teams at the end of the group games will qualify for Cote d’Ivoire 2023 AFCON holding next year.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Musa Gusau has given the team a stern warning ahead of the match as captain, Ahmed Musa apologized to Nigerians stating that the team will improve.
