The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has hailed the Super Falcons for becoming the first team to reach the quarterfinals of the 2025 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, following back-to-back victories in Group B.
The nine-time African champions opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Tunisia, followed by a hard-fought 1-0 triumph against Botswana on Thursday night, securing six points from their first two matches and an early ticket to the knockout stage.
Reacting to the team’s strong start, the Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadu, praised the players for their focus and determination in pursuit of a record-extending 10th continental title.
“Slowly but surely, the best team in Africa is progressing toward winning a tenth continental title,” said Amadu, who represents the Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency.
“Winning their first two matches in dominant fashion shows their seriousness and capability. The Super Falcons are clearly focused on reclaiming their crown.”
He reaffirmed the full backing of the Nigerian government and citizens for the team, stating:
“The Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation, and over 180 million Nigerians are fully behind the team.
“We are confident they can go all the way to the final and lift the trophy after a seven-year wait.”
The Super Falcons are scheduled to play their final group match against Algeria on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. Their quarterfinal opponent will be confirmed once the group stage concludes.
Hon. Amadu concluded by praising the depth and quality of the squad, expressing optimism that the team has all it takes to restore Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.
