Ikenne Receives Approval to Host 2025 NWFL Premiership Super Six Tournament

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has officially selected Ikenne in Ogun State as the host for the 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership Super Six Tournament. This marks the return of the six-team event to the South West for the first time since the 2021 edition in Ijebu Ode.

The championship will take place from Thursday, May 8, to Sunday, May 17, 2025. The matches will be held at the Remo Stars Stadium, the home field of Remo Stars Ladies.

NWFL Chairperson, Ms. Nkechi Obi, commented on the choice, saying: “On behalf of the NWFL board and management, I congratulate Ikenne and Ogun State for being chosen to host this year’s Super Six. This is a chance to boost women’s football in the state, known for hosting the first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final in 1998. It will also raise the game’s profile across Nigeria.”

She added, “Last year, we held the tournament in Yenagoa, and now we are bringing it to Ikenne, in line with our WomenFootballRising plan. We want to spread top-level women’s football to every region of Nigeria.”

This is the first time Ikenne will host the NWFL Premiership playoffs. The venue is familiar, as Remo Stars Ladies earned promotion there in 2023, just two years before.

A circular sent to the teams states that the 2025 Super Six will follow a round-robin format. Each of the six teams will play five matches. Teams are expected to arrive by Thursday, May 8. The tournament draw and pre-match meeting will happen on the following day.

So far, five clubs have secured their spots: Rivers Angels, Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, and Remo Stars Ladies. The last spot will be decided after the Matchweek 14 game between Robo Queens and Naija Ratels on April 30, 2025.

Over the past four seasons, the league has seen four different champions. Rivers Angels won in 2021, Bayelsa Queens in 2022, Delta Queens in 2023, and Edo Queens in 2024. This creates anticipation for an exciting contest for the title.

The winner of the Super Six will represent Nigeria in the WAFU-B Qualifiers for a spot in the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League. They will also compete for a place in the first-ever 2026 FIFA Women’s Club Championship.
