Sebastien Haller, who made a remarkable return to football after battling testicular cancer, emerged as the hero for Ivory Coast in their stunning victory to clinch their third Africa Cup of Nations title.

William Troost-Ekong provided Nigeria with an early lead with a header in the first half, but Franck Kessie equalized with a header of his own in the 60th minute.

In a dramatic turn of events, Haller scored the winning goal in the 81st minute, sealing Ivory Coast’s comeback and concluding an emotional journey.

For Haller, the goal was a poignant “reward” for his perseverance through adversity since being diagnosed with a testicular tumor 18 months earlier.

Reflecting on the tumultuous period, the Borussia Dortmund star shared his thoughts with The Athletic, describing it as a “nightmare” filled with challenges and setbacks.

“It was such a waste of energy and time for a lot of people and money for some as well. It was a dream that was going away,” Haller expressed.

Despite the struggles, Haller emphasized the significance of the victory, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of destiny and the joy it brings to the nation.

“The joyous scenes we see now, what’s happening in the country, they deserve it too. I really hope it does a lot of people good,” Haller concluded, reflecting on the impact of their triumph beyond the football pitch.
