‘It Was Painful’ — Botswana Coach Malete Disappointed With Defeat To Super Falcons

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Botswana head coach Alex Malete expressed that his team deserved better from their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Group B match against Nigeria’s Super Falcons.

The Mares suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to the nine-time champions at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Thursday night.

Malete’s team delivered a strong performance throughout the match, conceding only in the 90th minute.

This marked Botswana’s second defeat in the tournament, having previously lost 1-0 to Algeria in their opening game.

The young coach described the loss to Nigeria as painful.

“We deserved more, we deserved to get a point. It was all about demonstrating the spirit we possess as a team, and we have also displayed a great deal of quality,” Malete stated during a press conference.

“We will focus on the positives, despite the painful defeat. This was a chance for us to advance to the quarter-finals. When we arrived here, we all had the ambition to progress to the next round, and we will remain optimistic following today’s performance.

“It is something we can build upon, and in terms of our next game, we are determined to win, and I am confident we will succeed.”
