By Wale Mustapha
19 players have been recalled by the management of Kogi United ahead of the new Nationwide League One, NLO season.
The players were drawn from the pool of the sacked ones who saw the club relegated from the just concluded Nigeria National League, NNL season.
The club suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat against Hypebuzz in the last match of the season which confirmed their drop to the lower cadre of Nigerian league for the third consecutive seasons.
Chairman of Kogi United, Mallam Abdulmalik Issa told nigeriafootball.ng that the sacking of the players became necessary after an unimpressive season.
He however disclosed that 19 of the players have been recalled following an exhaustive review of the season and are expected to resume at a later date.
“We took that decision to sack all the players because it was the best decision to take at that material time,” Issa told Nigeriafootball.ng.
“The performance of the players so far this season has been below average and has fallen short of our expectations.
”We have decided to recall a few of the players who still have age, determination, dexterity and the desire to perform on their side back into the fold and we are also going to bring in young, energetic, determined and result oriented players to start an aggressive restructuring of the club ahead of next season.
“For now, the club has gone on a break after the Nigeria National League 2022/2023 Season came to an end and will announce a resumption date after the Eid El Adha Festivity.”
